Plug the drive in, switch it on, then wait a minute before checking the output of the dmesg terminal command. The question is, 'why isn't linux seeing the drive?' The WD Passport works fine in both linux and Windwoes when formatted as NTFS, FAT32, or exFAT.
I think you're asking the wrong question and running up the drainpipe of unfounded assumptions.
